A recent addition to the European Union (2007) is the country of Bulgaria. Often passed over for its more popular neighbours Greece and Turkey, this little country is a plethora of culturally and historically significant sights set against an amazing backdrop of mountain views, seaside resorts, and old-fashioned warmth and hospitality. This country has a rich history of Byzantine, Roman, and Thracian roots that have led the place to where it is today.
British visitors do not need a visa to stay for up to 90 days within a 6 month period. However, traveller’s medical insurance is mandatory for the duration of your stay and you may be asked to provide proof of it before entry into the country is allowed. You will also be required to provide proof of return ticket and upon request valid proof of funds for your trip. Keep in mind that while in some countries carrying a copy of your passport while touring around is acceptable, it is NOT within Bulgaria. If you are stopped for any reason within Bulgaria by the authorities a copy of your passport will not be accepted. You MUST carry your actual passport at all times.
Transportation within Bulgaria depends on where you are staying. The public transportation system varies by city, but taxis are the most reliably way to get around. There are plenty of 5 star resorts and hotels along the seaside coasts, as well as plenty of ski resorts within the mountains, and in the major cities, such as Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna.
English will be understood in most of the major areas, but the further into the countryside you get, the more rural things become. This is a country that still clings to the old way of life in a lot of ways, and none is more evident than the old-fashioned villages and scenic splendour of the countryside.
