Obtaining a Canada Work Permit

If one wishes to go to Canada for work purposes, it will be essential to obtain a Canada Work Permit. There are few exceptions to the law. The Canadian government states that those requiring a work permit or visa may not start work until the proper paperwork is completed and accepted.

The definition of “work” in Canada is essentially defined as any position for which the employee will receive remuneration, even if self-employed. There are exceptions where non-paying positions (e.g. interns) may require a work permit.

In order to work in Canada, you must have a solid job offer. One may not go to Canada and begin to search for work. Work permits are attached to a particular employer. If you should change jobs while in Canada, a new permit should be obtained. As a general rule, permits are valid for one year but can be validated for two to three years, depending on the circumstances.

In other words, a job offer must be on the table for someone to apply for a work permit. The work permit application requires details about the offer, including: employee responsibilities, salary, duration of job, location of job, and the title of the job position the applicant has applied for with the Canadian company.

Additional information may be required if the job offer falls into one of several specific categories.

Here is a list of the documents needed to apply for a Canada Work Permit: a valid passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, and evidence of one’s academic and professional credentials. Processing time for the application can take up to 8 weeks.

Andorra: To Ski or Not to Ski

Often classified as a mini-country of sorts against the backdrop of larger countries in Europe, the principality of Andorra is a haven for ski-bums from around the world, and possibly also one of the most popular shopping centres in the world.

Most tourists will tell you that only two things exist in Andorra: skiing and shopping. There are literally over 2000 shops in the capital of Andorra la Vella, and the place is made up of one huge traffic jam. But if you can get outside of the city you will see that this country has a lot more to offer than just shopping and skiing. The surrounding countryside holds some of the most majestic views within the Pyrenees Mountains region.

Getting here is different. There are no airports to this mountain destination. You can only arrive here by car, and only from Spain or France, the two countries Andorra is wedged between. Gas is generally cheaper in Andorra (depending on the time of year anywhere from 15-25% cheaper) so topping off your tank when you arrive is a good thing. However, if traffic is not your thing then it’s best if you simply park your car when you arrive, and take in the mountain trails on foot.

Andorra is mostly a snow-lover’s destination, although there are plenty of hiking trails to some of the more remote regions of the mountains. Most people come here to blow money in the shops, sip coffee in cafes, and enjoy a wind-burned face from skiing down the slopes. And if that’s your primary choice for vacation, then Andorra is absolutely your stop.

South America: A Land of Diversity

South America is home to some of the more recent discoveries in the modern tourist’s destination book. While always a destination for the adventurous soul, it is only in recent times that it has become considered “safe” for the average traveller. With the rise of the internet, the global shrinkage affect has helped spread not only information at a far more rapid rate, but has helped increase the visibility of many South American nations as not back-water, tribal nations, but nations whose cultural history is a rich tapestry of destinations just waiting to be explored.

South America is made up of a series of independent countries and territories governed by others. This can make coming to the area a bit of a complexity for the average traveller, as visa restrictions can vary from nation to nation. However, embassy websites abound, and planning a trip to South America for any reason is relatively straightforward. A little research and forethought can go a long way to making your trip hassle-free.

The variety of landscapes within South America is part of the appeal, along with the cultural and historical significance. The Andes Mountains, the Amazon River and Jungle, and the world-renowned wines of Chile and Argentina are just a few of the reasons people flock from all parts of the globe to this continent.

Without a doubt, South America can be one of the most exhilarating vacations or adventure getaways that you will experience in your lifetime. With such a broad range of exiting venues, it is a must-see for any tourist.

Applying for Travel Visas

Applying for travel visas can be tricky. Naturally, the requirements vary from country to country. Whilst almost every country requires an individual to have a valid passport, some countries also require the addition of a visa or travel permit.

Due to immigration requirements constantly changing, some travel visas and permits may be subject to change, so it is best to check with the official government office that handles the document in question. Data online or printed in travel books may be outdated or simply incorrect.

Certain countries do require visas. Some only require them for specific lengths of time, such as those visiting for 30 days or more. It is important to be prepared for your holiday with the correct type of travel visa (if required), because some countries may refuse entry or impose fines – or both. Nothing ruins a holiday faster than being turned away at the gate.

Since nearly everyone needs a passport to travel to a different country, it is important to make sure that it is valid and in date. One of the most common mistakes people make is to wait too long to apply for their passport. The passport agency in the UK states that it takes at least 3 weeks to process a passport, except for urgent requests, which incur an additional fee. Unless it is a last minute offer or an emergency, apply for your passport (or renewal) well in advance to make sure that you will have it in hand before you leave on your holiday.

If you do not have a passport, you may be eligible to receive a Certificate of Travel, but be sure to check with the destinations embassy to verify that this document is valid.

Cayman Islands – a taste of paradise!

Coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and soft, sandy beaches are just part of what makes the Cayman Islands a natural Caribbean destination for many tourists, either as a distinct travel location or a dot on the map as they make their way around the Caribbean on a cruise.

George Town is perhaps the single most well-known location within the Caymans, located on Grand Cayman itself. This busy capital city is more than just a holiday destination, however. With more than 500 banks the Grand Cayman Island has become known world-wide for its affluent society, although the casinos and wild club venues have managed to stay far away. This may be a high-society area, but it still retains its colonial feel.

Cayman Brac is another popular destination with its maze of sea caves and plentiful offshore wrecks for tourists to dive to. Most people come to this island for the diving, while beach tourists prefer to stick to the main Grand Cayman and the area surrounding George Town.

The Cayman Islands are another British territory. As a result, you do not need a travel visa to come if you are a UK citizen or resident. Simply bring your passport and travel arrangements.

With the variety of wild-life and tropical settings, the Cayman Islands are a natural stopping point for anyone enjoying a Caribbean holiday or cruise. The accommodation is plentiful and travel is as simple as stepping out of the door of your lodging. With the perfect combination of luxury and beauty, it is no wonder the Cayman Islands have become one of the leading Caribbean hotspots over the years.

Visiting Africa

Africa. The very name conjures up images of vast, desert landscapes and wilderness stretching for as far as the eye can see in all directions. Elephants, lions, zebras, meerkats, rhinos, giraffes … the list goes on. This is the land of the safari, and a land with a much-troubled past and a diversity of cultures and political turmoil that rival any on the globe.

Knowing where to go in Africa is key. Despite the beauty of the land, there are specific countries that you will want to avoid because of their political affiliations. Citizens of certain countries, especially in recent years, have to be extremely careful when going to regions where the laws are thin and those who enforce them pay more attention to cash than they do to actual upholding of the law. But despite the danger inherent in travelling to some foreign destinations, the majority of Africa is a massive, open plain of adventure that is safer than walking down the street to the local market. So long as you watch out for hungry lions!

Some research in advance will need to be done when you decide to head to Africa. With so many different countries on this continent, the visa regulations are as varied as the wildlife. Most trips to Africa revolve around a safari of some kind, and travel agents can easily tell you which countries require which types of visas, if any vaccinations are required, and whether or not you need insurance.

Planning ahead for a holiday is the same no matter where your destination is. And with Africa in particular, you can rest easy knowing that once the paperwork is out of the way, you are on your way to an adventure you will never forget.

Sink Your Teeth into Uruguay

Uruguay is often overlooked by travellers when they visit South America, probably because she hides in the shadow of her bigger brothers, Brazil and Argentina. As such, this tiny country is one of the gems of natural beauty that is to be discovered on this continent, and should absolutely be visited.

There are literally hundreds of kilometres of Atlantic beaches to explore, complete with relatively unknown but luxurious seaside resorts, and Uruguay boasts what some have called the best steaks to be found in the world, even better than those of Australia or Argentina. A bold claim, but one that is perhaps justified.

The majority of the country is a rolling sea of flat country and hilly meadows, carved through by rivers and grass. The country is relatively small, so you can probably see most of what is accessible to tourists within a few days to a week, but if you are an adventurous soul you could opt to stay for several weeks and take in the colonial villages that reach back to the 16th and 17th centuries during the Spanish occupation.

British nationals do not need a visa to come to Uruguay, simply their passport for up to 90 days. You can fly in direct to Montevideo, the capital, which sits atop the Rio Plata estuary where the Parana and Uruguay rivers enter the Atlantic. This is a busy harbour city, but is also noted as one of South America’s most vibrant and exciting places to visit, not only because of the food and wine, but the miles and miles of beaches.

Bring your appetite. The food in Uruguay is rated as some of the best in the entire South American continent, and you won’t want to miss sinking your teeth into the fresh tamales or a mouth-watering steak.

Experience the sunny beaches of Aruba

Ah, the sunny beaches of Aruba – the perfect spot for soaking in the sun and enjoying the life of a beach enthusiast. Whether you prefer the vast seven-miles of beaches that make up Palm Beach and Eagle Beach, or you prefer wind-sailing in some of the best conditions of the world, this Dutch island makes the perfect Caribbean destination and holiday.

Travel to Aruba as a UK citizen is fairly simply. You will need your passport, including proof of a return ticket. While a visa is not required, standard travel documents are sometimes asked for to verify that you are not entering Aruba with the intent to stay. It is rare, but immigration officials do reserve the right to ask for financial proof of your visit, to make sure you aren’t going to free-load off the locals. Traveller’s insurance is recommended, to cover any accidents that may happen during your stay.

Hotel accommodation on Aruba is top-notch. There are plenty of all-inclusive resorts, villas, and even apartments and condos that you can rent for the duration of your stay. Travel is easy, especially considering the size of the island. You can rent scooters and motorcycles, cars, or simply take taxis to your destination. There is also plenty of public transportation get you to and from the beaches so you don’t have to worry about the headache of rental.

Aruba is yet another of the amazing Caribbean destinations that will give you the Caribbean holiday you’ve been dreaming of. Bring plenty of sun-screen and an ample supply of pure indulgence to complete your vacation.

Paraguay – A Home Away from Home

For some, the lure of tropical paradise is what sends them to the far corners of the world. For others, it’s the mountains, the landscapes, and the epic scenery unfolding across the horizon. The variation in travellers is such that no matter where you go on this planet, you can always find a place to suit each and every adventurer inside of you.

Paraguay, South America, is a destination for the traveller who wants to feel at home, even though they are thousands of miles away from their actual residence. This fascinating country is a land of contrasts. In the rustic villages, horses and carts still act as part of everyday existence, yet drive the same roads as BMW and Mercedes Benz cars. There are modern colonial towns and lush, steamy tropical forests, markedly different from the wild and arid section of Northern Paraguay.

The easiest way to arrive is to fly in to the only international airport in Asuncion. Alternately you can travel by bus from neighbouring countries (such as if you wanted to come here from Santiago, Chile, or Santa Cruz, Bolivia), but bus travel is best reserved for the veteran explorer and backpacker, not the every-day average tourist. Once you get to the airport you can hire a taxi to take you to a hotel, of which there are plenty.

The people of Paraguay are what make this destination such a gem. While tourists are rare, they treat them as one of the family, making you feel right at home. There is no end to the wealth of information they are willing to give you regarding their culture and history, which can give you an experience beyond merely sight-seeing while in South America.
