Palma de Mallorca – more than meets the eye!

Flights to Palma de Mallorca arrive at Palma de Mallorca Airport (Aeropuerto de Palma de Mallorca). Some of the airlines that offer flights from Palma to the UK are Thomsonfly, EasyJet, TAP, KLM, British Airways, BMI and Lufthansa.

The most recent census records the population of the city at over 300,000. The slow pace of life here is in stark contrast to that of the country’s capital, Madrid.

There are many tourist attractions in Palma, especially within the city walls and they are all located within just a short distance of each other. The cathedral, Sa Seu, stands on the site of a former Arab mosque and legend has it that Jaime ordered I, its construction in 1306, after he survived a severe storm while sailing to Mallorca. Another historic site that should not be missed is Bellver Castle, which was originally built in the 14th century. If you would like to experience a panoramic view of the Bay of Palma this is the place to come. The site is accessible by taxi or you can simply take a walk from El Terreno.

For anyone tired of urban scenery, a visit to the caves that are to be found at various locations across the island should be at the top of your list. You are sure to be impressed by the thousands of stalactites at the Caves of Drach (Coves del Drach) at Portocristo. Adding to the spectacle is the imaginative lighting system and the mini concerts that are held regularly next to the subterranean lake. You can also take a short boat trip to complete your trip. The Caves of Hams and Caves of Arta are also well worth a visit.

Another great way to spend a day out of Palma is to take a ride on the vintage train that runs to Soller. The one-hour trip will take you through picturesque countryside along the Sierra de Tramuntana Mountains.
