The Insider’s Guide to Jordan

The ancient city of Petra is a spectacular site and often one of the first places travellers on flights to Jordan want to visit. The incredible sandstone structures carved directly out of the rock face date back to the third century BC. The treasury building, Al Khazneh, is perhaps the most impressive edifice at the site. An entry fee is required to gain access and with so much to see it’s well worth it to get there early to beat the crowds.

Wadi Rum was made famous by the movie, “Lawrence of Arabia” and remains one of the most popular destinations for tourists on flights to Jordan. The area’s amazing rock formations and gorgeous desert landscapes provide a stunning backdrop for all kinds of outdoor adventures like camping, hiking, rock climbing and camel trekking.

On the coast of the Red Sea lies the town of Aqaba, a popular seaside resort. The nearest town is the Israeli resort of Eilat, but because far fewer tourists visit Jordan than Israel, Aqaba is a much less developed and more peaceful destination. Try scuba diving or snorkelling along the coral reef or take a glass-bottom boat tour if you’re skittish about being underwater.

The Mosaic Map of Madaba, first discovered in 1896 and located in St. George’s Church, is an incredible artefact and a must-see on any visit to Jordan. The map is made of over two million pieces of mosaic tile and depicts a complete picture of the Holy Land. Apart from the map, the entire city of Madaba is rich in ancient history.
